A Rising ‘Posh-Poor Divide’: The Way Prosperity and Deprivation Are Found Side by Side in Across England.

Within a postwar estate known as ‘The Nunny’, residents live in homes only a few metres from their more affluent neighbours in the adjacent Scartho village. One six-foot-tall wall physically separates the two communities in Grimsby, Lincolnshire, blocking off roads and walkways that previously connected them.

“It’s the divide between rich and poor,” remarked a resident, 37. “It’s been like this since I’ve known. I don’t think they’ll take it down because I don’t think they’ll want to mix with us.”

A Stark National Picture

Analysis of government figures reveals the extent of inequality often exists, at times across little more than a few metres of tarmac, a line of hedges or a barrier. Decades of budget cuts and lack of funding mean almost two-thirds of councils now have a locality classified as one of the most deprived in the country.

The spread of deprivation has coincided with a sharp rise in the quantity of places where disadvantaged and well-off residents end up as immediate neighbours. In 2019, only 65 of the most deprived areas bordered one of the wealthiest. This number rose to 119 in the most recent data.

A Barrier Which Does More Than Separate Space

In Grimsby, the gap is the most pronounced in the country and starkly apparent. The wall is much more than a symbolic division; it causes tangible difficulties for daily routines.

  • The school commute that should take a quarter of an hour become an sixty-minute journey.
  • Access to key services like supermarkets, educational facilities and care homes is hindered.
  • The area often sees antisocial behaviour, with reports of rubbish being thrown over the wall and related problems.

“People strive to have a well-kept home and garden, and then you live opposite that,” said one local, motioning at the rusted metal wall.

Local Bonds Against a Backdrop of Challenges

At Centre4, workers emphasise that need transcends postcodes. “Where you live is not a reliable indicator of your level of challenge,” said chief executive a community leader.

Despite being placed in the lowest 10% for income, employment, education, health and crime, Nunsthorpe boasts a strong sense and feeling of community among its residents. Meanwhile, the neighbouring area ranks among the least deprived 10% nationally.

Echoes Elsewhere: Stanhope in Ashford

This pattern is mirrored across the country. The Stanhope estate in Ashford, Kent, a mid-century overspill estate, is in the 10% most deprived of neighbourhoods in the country. It is immediately adjacent by spacious detached homes built in the early 2000s that are in the top 10% for employment and living environment.

“They may possess bigger houses, but here there’s a stronger community,” commented Phil Hockley, aged 63. “You’ll probably find many people in the new builds don’t even speak to each other.”

The financial gap is evident: an typical three-bedroom house sells for about £275,000 on the estate, while on the other side comparable homes go for about £410,000.

Residents describe a tangible feeling of being overlooked. “This part of the community gets ignored,” said holistic health worker Susan. “In this area our amenities have slowly been taken away, and the majority of the community problems here are related to financial hardship.”

The increase in these ‘deprivation divides’ presents a portrait of an increasingly segregated society, where wealth and need are frequently awkwardly close neighbours.
