Are You Not Being Entertained? The Fall of Open-Play Goals from Open Play

Football match action
Wolves recorded 10 fewer scores from open-play situations compared to this point last season.

A key narrative of the EPL this campaign has been the drop of scoring in open play and how clubs are netting increasingly from set-pieces as an alternative.

When we compare scoring methods to the initial 11 matches last season, there have been a drop of 39 goals in open-play and 26 more from team set-pieces and spot-kicks, leading to 13 less in total.

Considering the broader view, efforts on goal clubs are making have seen a staggering 370 fewer in open-play than at this stage previously.

And despite the significant rise in set-play finishes, records show just two more attempts produced from them outside of penalties, showing how effective clubs are at finding ways to convert from set-pieces.

Scoring Rates Show the Tale

The 301 goals recorded in 110 matches to date works out at 2.74 scores per game, if this persists for the whole season would be the least for since 2020-21, since 2020-21 (2.69 average).

However, only 196 scores coming in open-play equates to 1.78 per fixture and is tracking to be the lowest for 16 years, back in 2009-10 (1.76 average).

2009-10 also marks the unique EPL season to experience scoring at a higher rate from non-penalty set-pieces than the current rate of 0.77 per fixture (0.79).

Which Sides Account for This Change?

When it comes to scoring from open-play, Wolverhampton Wanderers have seen by far the biggest drop, scoring just four in their first 11 fixtures, a reduction of 10 than at this stage the previous campaign.

Outside of Wolverhampton, England's top division's decline in open-play scoring is predominantly a London phenomenon, with five of the city's seven teams recording at least five fewer goals from open play than last season.

To be fair, this is mainly because their scoring lots of goals at the beginning of last season rather than their genuine struggle to convert in open-play the current term.

At the same time Manchester City have experienced the biggest increase, with all but one of their 23 goals so far coming in open play.

Set-Play Proficiency

Looking at the promoted teams with the teams that went down that they superseded. Play-off champions Sunderland have recorded three more goals in open-play than the Saints achieved in matchday 11 en route to relegation the previous campaign.

When it comes to goals scored from dead-ball situations (excluding penalties), the Gunners and Chelsea have seen the most significant jump, with the two clubs compensating for the reduction of five goals that they've netted in open play with identical figures from set-pieces.

United have recorded two times more goals from set-pieces as they did in matchday 11 the previous campaign prior to Ruben Amorim took charge, while Sunderland additionally have been more successful at converting than the fellow red-and-whites they superseded.

Manchester City appear not to have received the trend about scoring more from set-pieces, because they've scored three fewer than last season, like the Reds, though this may result from the altered approach they're working to install.

General Tendencies

Six clubs – the Gunners, the Blues, the Cottagers, the Magpies, Spurs and West Ham – represent the current campaign's primary examples by netting less scores from open play and increased from set-plays, while City represent the only side to defy the pattern so far by achieving the exact opposite.

It remains to be seen to observe if sides persist to place such emphasis on set-plays as the season goes on or if they regain their all-round creativity and start converting additional scores in open play also.
