Ethiopia Takes Back Cultural Artefacts Following a Long Stay in a German Family
Around 12 historical artefacts were formally restored to the Ethiopian nation following remaining by a family in Germany for in excess of 100 years.
These artefacts, first acquired in the 1920's by the German diplomat to the Ethiopian empire a German envoy and his spouse his partner, were delivered on Wednesday to the research center at Addis Ababa University.
The collection featured crowns, armor and paintings, each considered as culturally valuable in the country.
"The artefacts still represent a emblem of the lasting and amicable relationship between the German nation and Ethiopia," stated the German diplomat, Germany's representative to the East African country.
Dr. Ramon Wyss, whose father was born during the family's service in Ethiopia, handed over the artefacts at a gathering joined by the Minister of Tourism Selamawit Kassa.
He stated that the household's aim to return the items was to "showcase their appeal with the people and preserve the culture and history linked to my father's origin."
The objects were either considered donations or acquisitions, based on the relatives.
"I would like to express gratitude to Professor Weiss's relatives for practically expressing their sincere affection for Ethiopia by carefully safeguarding these artifacts and importantly ensuring their repatriation to their rightful homeland," said the tourism minister.
The minister added that the artefacts would in the near future be made accessible to the public for investigation and academic study, calling the action a significant step in safeguarding Ethiopia's historical legacy.
"Initiatives are ongoing to repatriate old artifacts that are located in the possession of private persons and organizations throughout the world," the minister said.
In the era of colonialism in the African continent, thousands of cultural artefacts were plundered.
The request by African countries for the restoration of taken artefacts has been answered with certain positive outcomes in recent years - though a number of objects are just on short-term display.
In 2022, the German government was the initial state to repatriate a selection of the well-known Benin artifacts to the West African nation as part of an effort to address its "complex colonial history."
