Eurovision Was Once a Whimsical Delight – Yet It Has Become a Cynical Way to Whitewash War.

An new acronym surfaced a few months into Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it signifies “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This acronym is specific to Gaza, as stated by doctors like paediatricians. Ordinarily, it is unusual for doctors to care for a minor who has seen the death of their complete family. But, there has been nothing “normal” regarding the devastating conflict in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been obliterated and the number of children who have lost limbs exceeds that of anywhere else in the world. No sense of normalcy about many doctors coming back from a landscape of rubble with testimonies of children being intentionally shot at.

A Living Nightmare In Spite Of a Reported Truce

Conditions in Gaza persist as a profound humanitarian disaster. Essential medical supplies are failing to reach those in need, and groups like Amnesty International have stated that genocidal acts are ongoing. The Israeli government disputes these claims, consistent with how it disavows each claim it is accused of. But while traumatised orphans are now freezing in improvised encampments, there is a piece of uplifting information: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from continuing with its professed goal of “unity and cultural exchange.” Eurovision will continue to extend a welcoming platform for Israel, although at least four European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Since this, it seems, is what global togetherness manifests as.

Historically, Eurovision excluded Russia from competing in 2022 due to the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza appears to be entirely distinct.

Contradictory Principles

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was accused of unfair vote practices last year in what could be seen as an attempt to politicise Eurovision. Set aside the news that a toddler was reportedly killed in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Forget the fact that settler violence and coerced removal in the West Bank have increased dramatically. Disregard the condition that foreign reporters are still blocked from freely reporting in Gaza. None of this, evidently, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds While Ignoring Unimaginable Suffering

Eurovision reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – almost double the average life expectancy of a person in Gaza today. The broadcast will air, but it will never be able to restore the camp joy it was formerly known for. A contest that once promoted peace has devolved into a cynical way to provide a cultural veneer for conflict.
