Even England's Aggressive Cricket's Downfall, this Loyal Fan Group's Group of Ashes Veterans Is Unmoved.

Steady, soldier. Ben Stokes's side could be entering the upcoming Ashes Test now 2-0 down, however some remain among supporters is disheartened. There is one unit perfectly suited for these circumstances, a unwavering unit who are arguably the supreme experts in defeat. Have your dreams been shattered? Are you crushed beneath the burden of failed hopes? Well then, enlist with the Barmy Army.

Early Arrivals Move In on an Anniversary City

Even now, their early arrivals are moving in on Adelaide, the city where they officially formed 30 years ago. England's best-known – and by headcount noisiest – travelling fans will be anticipating an anniversary win-against-the-odds, like the one they celebrated on that 1994-95 tour. Furthermore whatever happens on the pitch, off it the parties will be extensive and boisterous.

"The cricket's been incredibly disappointing," a veteran states, "but we're the blessed group, because we're on holiday. It's probably harder for the people at home."

Even Bazball's nuclear implosion fails to deter this group of hardened veterans. They've been watching England's top-order failures since prior to a new generation were born. They've witnessed more dropped catches than some bowlers have career scalps. Their collective record as an Ashes supporters' club stands at: played 37, lost 27, won 6. Those who knows how to endure a clean sweep, that would be the long-standing fans.

A Ubiquitous Force In Coverage

Certainly, for viewers at home, the Barmy Army are seen to be ubiquitous in this contest. TV directors at the grounds sometimes appear more interested in the Barmies than on their own fans. TV partners often use them as entertainment-focused buildup to a day's play. Remarkably the athletes on the field acknowledge them, as someone clad as a royal figure starting a rendition of a well-known tune.

From Backpackers to Establishment

It's possible that the Barmy Army's combination of history and omnipresence has now obscured quite how stunning their rise of away support has been. Thirty years in the past a few followers were drawn together in good-natured self-deprecation at England's poor away record. In the present day their reputation is so intertwined with the national team that their colourful, "maverick" crowd is practically establishment itself. They've definitely come a far since the initial chants.

One founding member recalls the buoyant hope of the opening day of that pioneering tour. After the Australians building a solid score, he started a modest conga in the stands, provoking the Australian supporters with a song about convicts. "The Aussie fans hurled abuse at us, then threw rubbish – the kind of thing that we occasionally encounter today," he remembers. "However when we got back our small band of England followers had all participated."

Earning Appreciation From Players

After an early setback, England's tour suffered more defeats. Any supporter following the team around the country was considered truly dedicated. As the tour reached the bigger venues their crowd had grown significantly. The squad, however, came to value their noise at the grounds. When England pulled off a notable triumph, a senior player beckoned a Barmy Army figure up to the team balcony to direct the festivities. Such camaraderie persists.

An Evolving Institution

But then, the sheer numbers the Barmy Army can conjure are as valuable to the cricket authorities as they are to international stadiums. At this Ashes alone, their organised trips will host a significant contingent of paying travellers. All kinds of activities are planned for the 30th anniversary.

This is, ultimately, an entity born of cricketing passion and business acumen. The reason they mark their founding to a Adelaide game is because that was when they started producing branded clothing. The short initial run was so quickly sold out – and financially rewarding – that it sparked a lasting enterprise. Since then, the original members have helped turn a pub-based supporters into an industry-leading travel company.

Modern Evolution

That brings its own challenges, especially at a time when sport is looking to shed some of its rowdy image. The Barmy Army's leadership are keen to point out that a significant portion of their travelling fans are now female. With societal shifts, the vocals have had to get less offensive, too. "Things that were common 30 years ago you can no longer say, and that's as it should be," says a representative. "It's not possible to tell someone how to behave in their own space, but we won't support songs that are derogatory."

{A Natural Mellowing?

Could the Barmy Army mellow naturally? The demographic is now approaching middle age – mirroring the founders themselves, who have been pleased to step away from the daily operation. One founder is experiencing this tour purely as a fan – leaving newer staff to populate the Barmy Army's online channels. "It's easy to overlook how challenging it used to be to communicate with each other," he chuckles. "We used to do it all by meeting up – 'everyone's going to the pub!'"

Turning to the current contest, the impossible dream of a historic comeback persists, which is typical of their spirit indeed. In the event England succumb in Adelaide … well, South Africa next Christmas awaits.
