In a recent appearance, star Jude Law stated he had no concerns about backlash for playing Vladimir Putin in a cinematic adaptation. This production, however, could coincide so closely with the mythologized image promoted by Russian state media that, domestically, it functions as a endorsement instead of a critique.

The Manufactured Superhero

Over a long period, the Kremlin and the country's pop-culture machine have worked together to craft a made-to-measure persona of Putin. This character is a political superhero without age or mistakes, a former spy reframed as a local 007 who always knows more than he reveals.

Screen-Based Support

One recent example is a TV series launched last October, helmed by a pro-government filmmaker. Its main character is a invented security officer selected by fate to “save” Russia from disorder. Although the character's name a different name, the message is clear: the hero must be a known figure from the secret services.

Western portrayals frequently result in reinforcing this identical story rather than undercutting it. A new film based on a popular book aims to undermine the Putin cult by presenting him not as a cause but as a symptom, moving the narrative weight to the political machinery surrounding him.

The Myth of the Reluctant Leader

On screen, the president is presented as having been picked by powerful oligarchs to steady the nation because he is “a fit former intelligence agent”. The oligarchs approach him and all but beg him to take the top job. His response is that he would rather govern from the shadows, seeking enduring influence.

This narrative is a key piece of state propaganda: the detached, unwilling mastermind shaped by destiny. In reality, none of this took place.

The Reality of the Casting Call

No one ever begged Putin to accept the role. The presidency was in essence a selection process with many candidates. At the centre to this process stood a powerful businessman from the Yeltsin era who planned to control the country de facto.

• The shortlist featured several politicians, among them a reformer subsequently assassinated and a former spy chief.
• Per a journalist who researched his rise, the chosen candidate merely met the necessary criteria: loyal, from the intelligence world, and not a communist or a liberal.
• A property developer close to the events stated the primary requirement was controllability and faithfulness, not leadership.

Constructing the Spy Legend

Experts agree that the notion of him as a master operative was constructed retrospectively. Stories about his clandestine activities in East Germany do not stand up to scrutiny. In essence, he was an administrator and routine duties, a low-level clerk not engaged in actual agent work.

Interestingly, the shift to depicting him as a “spy” may in part have been triggered by the actor's debut as 007. The grittier interpretation prompted Russian media and online audiences to draw visual parallels with Putin. Mashup posters replacing the actor's likeness with his surfaced on city centers, feeding the increasing trend to see him as a Russian 007.

A Diplomatic Opportunity?

Given the casting, an actor popular with Russian audiences, the authorities will not miss the chance to portray this choice as a minor diplomatic triumph. Its omission of mass protests, the opposition, or prominent activists from its narrative, even though it includes the past decade, is a welcome aspect for official messaging.

Domestically, the president is often an all-powerful presence who never appears directly. His influence is hinted at through photographs or calls “from above”. In this new film, he at last gets a famous actor's visage—one that could unintentionally validate the very myths it perhaps aims to question.
