SNAP Payments Set to Cease for Tens of Millions During Ongoing Government Closure
USDA officials declared on Saturday that monthly food benefits through a critical national support systems are not going out in November because of the continuing federal closure.
Closure Continues For Nearly Four Weeks
The funding lapse had reached nearly a month as officials revealed the news, in response to calls from over 200 Democratic representatives pushing agriculture officials to utilize contingency funds to pay for next month's benefits.
âThe reality is, resources are exhausted,â the USDA stated. âNow, there will be no benefits issuedâ on 1 November.
Millions Affected
Tens of millions of people rely on the regular assistance, as reported by federal data. In certain states, like one southwestern state, dependence on this assistance affects a significant portion of citizens.
Internal communications seen by Reuters revealed that USDA officials chose not to tap reserve funds for November food benefits.
Partisan Impasse
Lawmakers from both parties remain deadlocked about the way to support and resume government operations.
A statement from the head of a budget research center suggested that the White House had opportunities to take earlier action to avoid interruption in payments.
âOfficials were able and expected to taken steps before now to be prepared to access these resources,â the statement continued. âConversely, officials could opt out to secure political leverageâ as Republicans seek to pressure Senate Democrats to vote for legislation that would resume the federal government.
States Prepare
Executives in multiple regions issued emergency declarations recently to make money available to combat potential hunger expecting SNAP benefits not being issued next month.
