The Gaming Giant Hires Popular Battle Royale Developer to Revitalize Struggling Action Game Project Ethos
2K Games has secured a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to direct the studio crew at 31st Union, which is currently working on the anticipated over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as Project Ethos.
Leadership Transition Follows Mixed Reception
Brinkman assumes the role of studio head at 31st Union following the dismissal of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's lackluster early showing last autumn.
Recently, 2K president David Ismailer informed staff about this decision through an official communication, which highlighted that playtesting had revealed the requirement for a distinct direction.
Ismailer noted that the team is now refining Project Ethos with a revised approach, aiming to better meet community desires.
A Pattern of Key Acquisitions
This announcement follows a comparable step taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to contribute to the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Below is the full message from Ismailer's communication:
Dear Team—
I understand you all just completed your gathering - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the good news. Previously I sent you all a note, I expressed the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most driven and innovative designers we have had the opportunity to work with - and we’re looking forward for that relationship to endure.”
With your dedication and adaptability, especially over the last year, you continue to prove that.
The gamer responses from last fall’s the game testing phase was informative. It affirmed the promise of a action-packed game but indicated we still had work to do. It uncovered the need for a more distinct brand.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve advanced. You embraced the input to mind and overhauled the title with a refreshed direction - one that’s positioned to deliver on its promise to our fans.
The belief in this project grows every day. To boost the outstanding development you’ve made, I am thrilled to welcome Ben Brinkman as the new Director of 31st Union. After several months of conversations, Ben comes aboard us on Monday, October 20.
His leadership and expertise in the PVP shooter field is considerable, having devoted the last 15 years developing and managing some of the most popular franchises in gaming, including the acclaimed shooter, and lately, the battle royale hit.
Let’s together in receiving Ben soon. We are all eager to persist witnessing the development of the game in the time to follow.
David
