The golfing superstar hails Sports Personality victory with individual and team awards.
Just prior to he was crowned, a trepidatious worry flashed through the golfer's mind. He said he was hoping, "Please don't let it be an F1 driver this time."
"Tonight represents a tremendous night for golf," he stated. "The sport was celebrated in such a major way, with the team winning and then with my award. It's a special evening for golf, and with any luck we can use that."
In this instance, however, there was no late twist. The result was decisive, allowing a thrilled McIlroy to enjoy a memorable evening for both himself and the continental winners, who were honored as team of the year.
Constant Motion
But rather than celebrate at the post-ceremony celebrations, McIlroy was already plotting his upcoming event. Having just played in a tournament in Florida and jetted to the UK, he was heading straight back to Florida.
"It's been a whirlwind 24 hours," he said. "I'm looking forward to a little bit of rest over Christmas."
Unfinished Business
That said, McIlroy made clear he has no plans to slow down, even after securing the ultimate golfing achievement earlier in the year. "I am confident I've got a more to give in me," he claimed.
"Additional major championships, tour championships, team competitions, that's the aim. But if you feel like you can keep progressing and have the drive, that's the key."
Squad Celebration
Meanwhile, teammate Tommy Fleetwood, who was on stage to accept the collective trophy, also praised golf's exceptional night and his great friend's personal achievement.
"Those are the memories that will live with us for all time so to get the fan's acknowledgment for that is amazing," Fleetwood said. "And to be there Rory pick that up, I think he has earned it so much."
After it was noted that McIlroy was only the third player from golf to win the award in its 71-year history, Fleetwood grinned before quipping, "We're not the most popular are we!"
Looking Ahead
He is aiming to finally win his first major next year but he recognized McIlroy still craves more success. "Provided that you want to be the best you can be, and you're still inspired, you'll find things to enhance," he noted.
Club Support
Before McIlroy left, one final question came up. As a huge Manchester United fan, he has been invited to show his trophies at Old Trafford before. So could he be convinced to do it again after his latest triumphs?
"If they stop conceding four goals at home," McIlroy responded with a grin. "Improvements are being made. There's a hint of hope around."
Following a remarkable year, it's no wonder that Rory McIlroy is looking on the upside.
