The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Chose the Wrong Critical Role Track
This latest animated series, the newest animated adventure by the beloved role-playing group, unveiled an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases the beloved group of outcasts, outcasts, and rogues fighting hard and taking names, while teasing at multiple agonizing backstories for key figures including the voice actor's mage Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, Fjord.
Overall, the intro appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that something was missing in the music selection.
This sequence uses "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional composition composed by artist the talented musician. It's a track from the official score of the same name, the second release put out by the production company's record label their music brand. It's a great sentimental choice, and I believe that fans of the sequel series will love its inclusion.
Personally, The series' opening doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by singer-songwriter the artist, was an instant classic in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when co-founder the performer added lyrics to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Including singing from one actress, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the track was catchy and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't seen the follow-up series yet, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of fantasy hijinks.
The show's opening with "the new song" doesn't strike the right notes for me. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of this party, I can't help but feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.
Of course, Critical Role has stated that the animated show will have some surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening seems to be one of them.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or wish to prepare to learn about the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are available on Spotify and YouTube.
