Trump Invites Relatives of Shot National Guard Soldiers to White House
President Trump stated on Sunday that he has extended an invitation the family of a Guard member killed last week to attend the White House.
He mentioned that he contacted her family and they were “heartbroken”.
Background on the Devastating Shooting
Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, was killed in a attack on last Wednesday in Washington DC.
Her comrade, Staff Sgt Andrew Wolfe, twenty-four years old, is still in the hospital in critical condition.
Gatherings across West Virginia have taken place in their memory.
Presidential Invitation
The president explained he’s proposed a White House visit for the families of both individuals of the West Virginia National Guard.
“I said: ‘When you’re ready, because that’s a difficult moment, visit the White House. We’re going to recognize Sarah,” Trump addressed the press. “And in the same way with Andrew, no matter the outcome.”
Public Response
Attendees assembled over the past few days at a local school in the state to pay respects to Beckstrom.
Both she and Wolfe had been fulfilling duties with the West Virginia National Guard as part of Trump’s national effort to aid policing efforts in Washington DC.
Remembering Sarah Beckstrom
“Sarah was the type of pupil that educators wished for. She carried herself with inner fortitude, a contagious smile and a upbeat demeanor that lifted those around her,” the principal, the head of her former high school, told the Associated Press. “She was sweet, considerate and always eager to support those in need.”
Service details for Beckstrom are yet to be finalized.
Legal Measures and Policy Revisions
Law enforcement have indicted a 29-year-old individual from Afghanistan with one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder while armed.
The incident prompted the government to halt asylum applications and temporarily stop granting entry permits to holders of Afghan passports.
Status of Wolfe
Andrew Wolfe, a native of Martinsburg, started his military career in 2019 and is a 2019 graduate of Musselman High, according to the news agency.
He is still undergoing care and is “in a critical fight”, the state’s leader Morrisey mentioned on a news program.
The state’s top lawyer Pam Bondi told Fox News Sunday that she planned to meet with the family.
Legacy of Sarah Beckstrom
Sarah, from her hometown, completed her education from Webster County High in mid-2023 and joined the military shortly after, serving as a law enforcement officer with honor, per the state guard.
“She had a lot of kindness and she absolutely had courage,” the governor informed the gathering at the memorial. “Though her life ended too soon, she has made an impact that’s going to last forever.”
