US Law Enforcement Announce Arrests in Thwarted Year-End Bomb Plan Close to Los Angeles
Federal agents announced on Monday that they had effectively disrupted a elaborate scheme to set off IEDs at numerous locations belonging to two American companies on New Year's Eve in the LA region. The operation resulted from the detainment of suspects linked to an radical offshoot promoting anti-corporate and anti-authority views.
Suspects Apprehended During Isolated Rehearsal
A quartet of individuals were arrested last Friday in the desert region situated east of Los Angeles as they were allegedly running through their planned strike. Prosecutors showed overhead surveillance footage to reporters, that showed the suspects transporting a big black device to a surface. Officials emphasized that the apprehensions took place before the group could assemble a working bomb.
Details of the Suspects Made Public
Based on the public legal filing, the four people named are a 30-year-old named Audrey Illeene Carroll; Zachary Aaron Page, 32; Dante Gaffield, 24; and Tina Lai, 41. The group are understood to be from the LA vicinity.
Reported Motive and Ties
Even though prosecutors did not explicitly describe a motive, they stated the group are adherents of a splinter group called the Turtle Island Liberation Front. This entity allegedly calls for "the working class to revolt and combat against corporate power," according to the criminal complaint.
The charges involve plotting and possession of a bomb. The government noted that more charges are anticipated in the next few weeks.
Particulars of the Supposed "Operation Midnight Sun"
Authorities revealed that one of the individuals had devised a step-by-step scheme last month to target multiple corporate facilities across Southern California on New Year's Eve. The intended sites were described as "similar to Amazon" distribution warehouses.
"The bomb plot was explicit," an official said. "It included detailed directions to make bombs … and named several sites across Orange County and Los Angeles."
Based on the probe and the complaint, the plot entailed planting backpacks containing complex IEDs that were planned to be exploded simultaneously at midnight on New Year's Eve at 5 locations. New Year's Eve was chosen as an ideal time as the plan noted "fireworks will be going off at this time so detonations will be more difficult to be heard."
An eight-page manually written blueprint, titled "OPERATION MIDNIGHT SUN," suggested that additional sites could be incorporated. The sites were categorized as premises and facilities owned by two separate firms involved in activities affecting national and international trade.
Future Plots and Materials Found
Court documents also revealed that two individuals in the collective had talked about future strikes targeting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers and vehicles with explosives in 2026. One individual according to the complaint commented that such strikes "would kill some and intimidate the rest of them."
Such discussions were allegedly talked over both at an face-to-face gathering in Los Angeles and through an encrypted messaging app.
Pictures included in the case file show a remote camp with what investigators said were bomb-making components scattered on plastic folding tables.
The filing states that the individuals "carried explosive materials to the site, among them various sizes of PVC pipes, believed to be potassium nitrate, charcoal briquettes, charcoal powder, another chemical, and items to be used as fuses, among others."
Instructions also included steps on how to construct the explosives and how to prevent leaving evidence that could be traced back to the faction. The individuals had in the recent past acquired chemical ingredients and other materials, including acquisitions from major websites.
Apprehension and Follow-up
Authorities intervened last week when the group were running through the operation in the remote area near a desert community. "They owned everything they needed to construct an operational explosive device at that place," an official said.
During served raids, authorities reportedly found flyers for the Turtle Island Liberation Front at one individual's home that called for "Death to America", and "Death to ICE". At another accused's residence, police discovered a version of the detailed explosives scheme.
The suspects were taken into custody peacefully. They were due to make a court appearance in Los Angeles on Monday afternoon.
